Uluru (Ayers Rock), Central Australia, 1999. This rock outcrop is an isolated remnant of a vanished mountain range. Its sandstone strata were originally deposited in horizontal layers on a shallow sea floor. An episode of mountain building about 300 to 400 million years ago then tilted the structure to become nearly vertical. The rock is 1140 feet high, and the exposed thickness of the strata is nearly 8000 feet. The site is sacred to the local Aboriginal people.
