Carnac, France, 1985. Some 1100 prehistoric standing stones (menhirs) extend in 11 or 12 rows over the landscape near Carnac in Brittany. They occupy an area about 3800 feet long by 300 feet wide. The hamlet of Ménec (right) bounds the western end of the configuration. The megaliths may date from around 3300 BC.
