Chichen Itza, Caracol, 1982. Dating to AD 906, the Caracol is the oldest Toltec-Mayan building at Chitzen Itza. The name Caracol means “snail” and refers to an interior spiral staircase. Sight lines of its windows suggest that the building may have functioned as an astronomical observatory.
