Galatas, 2008. The Minoan palace of Galatas in central Crete, about 20 miles south of Heraklion, was discovered and excavated by George Rethemiotakis and colleagues beginning in 1992. Galatas is unusual in that the palace was built in only one period. The paved central courtyard of the palace is about 105 feet long and runs north to south. Galatas was apparently destroyed by earthquakes and abandoned around 1500 BC, after about two centuries of occupation.
