Nemrut Dag, Anatolia, 2008. The colossal limestone head of Antiochos I, King of Commagene stands at the base of his burial tumulus (background), atop Mount Nemrut (7000 feet high) in eastern Turkey. Antiochos I ruled Commagene from 69 to 36 BC and was an ally of Rome. The remote mountaintop site remained unknown to the outside world until a German engineer rediscovered it in 1881.
