Pompeii, Theater and Court of the Gladiators, Italy, 1991. In 79 AD the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius destroyed and completely buried the Roman city of Pompeii. The Large Theater was built in the 4th century BC and had about 5000 seats. It faces the arcaded Court of the Gladiators. The Small Theater (upper left) was built around 80 BC and was probably used for music and poetry.
