Town Creek, North Carolina, 1982. This reconstructed Mississippian ceremonial center flowered between AD 1450 and 1650. Notable features include a protective log palisade, a truncated pyramid (rising some 17 feet from an 86-foot-square base) and a 35-foot earthen ramp that leads from the plaza area to the top of the pyramid.
