Delos, 2006. In Greek mythology Leto gave birth to Apollo and Artemis on Delos, and from at least 2000 BC the island was a religious center. Delos was “purified” in 426 BC when all graves were removed, accompanied by the proclamation that no one could be born or die there. Anyone about to give birth or to die was forced to leave. The Romans arrived in 250 BC and changed this holy ground into a slave market. The early 3rd century BC theater once held some 5000 spectators.
