Aegina, Temple of Aphaia, 2004. Aegina, an island in the Saronic Gulf, was often at war with nearby Athens. The temple of Aphaia, dating from circa 500 BC, was dedicated to a local version of the Cretan goddess Britomartis, a friend of Artemis, and is among the best preserved Classical buildings in Greece.
