Koufonisi, 2008. The sea is eroding the high walls of a small Roman settlement on the northwest shore of Koufonisi, a now uninhabited island off the southeast coast of Crete. In antiquity, the settlement was a major source of royal purple dye derived from the murex, a marine mollusk.
