Sipán, Lambayeque Valley, 1988. Plundered by looters and ravaged by rains, Sipán’s two adobe pyramids rise above irrigated fields and loom over a low burial platform (foreground). In 1987, excavators discovered the burial remains of a Moche lord, dating to around AD 300, accompanied by retainers and great numbers of gold and silver objects. Since then, another lavish burial has been found.
