Machu Picchu Among the Peaks of the Andes, 1989. Machu Picchu’s spectacular cloud-forest setting surrounded by sacred peaks added to its importance as a religious center. Its inaccessible location, defensive walls, and dry moat probably served to limit access to the religious precinct rather than to deter would-be invaders.
